In this project, I made a picture book. I used some mixed media to do this project on paper and try to use some collage, which is a challenge for me. In the past, I am used to illustrating with digital media and comfortable with it. I chose to try the new media because the subject matter of this book is quite innocent, and the target audience is children aged 5-8. Therefore, I hoped that my picture would have that kind of interesting random texture of original painting materials.
According to the two parts of the book "The childish superstition" and "the mature fact", I also made some distinctive designs on the binding. After opening the book, it will be divided into two books for people to read at the same time. One book is on the left and the other is on the right, and their content is relevant. The theme on the left is "The childish superstition", which presents some interesting things that children believe at their age. For instance, they believe that the relatives who died will look at us as stars in the sky. They also believe that wishing can be achieved by making a wish at a shooting star, cutting off their hair and putting it in a wishing bottle, or blowing out the candles on their birthday. They even believe that their noses will grow longer after lying, or girls touching boys will get pregnant...
The theme on the right is "The mature fact", which are some mature facts corresponding to the left's content. It would tell the children that those relatives who died will not come back but will still live in our memories. They would also realize that wishing is not the way to make their dreams come true, and making an effort is necessary. What's more, this book would tell them that they need to maintain normal relationships with other children, and they can have friends of different genders and even aliens...
In the preparation stage of the project, I once chatted with my teacher and some friends about some naive ideas in childhood and some fooleries that happened because of immature thoughts. Therefore, I have some new inspirations and want to convey some mature cognition to children in a fun and appropriate way, so as to change their cognitive process subtly.
